A $20 Standing Desk

Many people have written about standing desk. Many are for standing, many are not. How do you feel about it? For me, I only have a basic understanding of why someone would want to use a standing desk. Here is what I understand in a summary:

It’s more about moving than it is specifically standing. If you stand for a period of time you tend to move your body more, shifting your weight from one leg to another, leaning over on your elbows, etc... When you move so does this stuff called lymph. This stuff basically helps filter your blood and removes a bunch of stuff that could make someone sick. The tricky thing about the Lymphatic System is that it only works when you move, hence the reason (among many others) why doctors tell you to be active.

So my take away is that sometimes you should stand, sometimes you should sit, and sometimes you should go for run. As long as you’re not stationary in the same place for hours a day, every day, you’re probably going to be okay.

Okay, on to the point of this standing thing… I wanted to try a standing desk but I wasn’t willing to spend the money on a “real” desk if I didn’t actually like it. To give it a test drive I decided to put together my own desk. If you Google search standing desk you will find all sorts of DIY desks. Most of these were still too rich for my blood. However, I ended up finding some metal shelf brackets at Ikea that clamp to a desktop. Four of these brackets combined with a thick piece of glass I had in my garage I was able to make the perfect sized desk for my height.

This standing desk only cost me $20. Well, $20 plus tax… and a plate of swedish meatballs from the food court.
